Reason #66: Flowers can bring you joy.

Are you feeling stressed? Beaten down? Tired? Generally just. not. great?

Do you feel like you're surviving but not thriving?

I know how it feels to struggle with apathy, to be totally burnt out, and to be exhausted. I'm a stay-at-home mom with four kids ages five and under. I know how it feels to struggle to get through the monotony of all the bland daily moments of chores, work, cooking, bills, diaper changes, and on and on and on.

In my experience, it was never the enormous, sweeping, all-encompassing giant project overhaul energy that ever made a change for me. I always had grand ideas and schemes to rework my schedule, get a brand-new system or routine, make a big purchase, or create a new activity for the kids. They were always too big and too hard, and they led to me feeling discouraged that nothing improved.

You know what does work?

Little things. Tiny changes. No problem too small. Make the problem as minuscule as you possibly can. Narrow your focus more tightly than you ever thought possible. Perhaps the answer to feeling exhausted and burnt out is not to rework the entire family's routine, institute a new meal plan schedule, and make everybody do morning meditation.

Maybe it's putting fresh flowers on the table. Now, in the morning, you breathe them in and get a small but powerful, regular dose of rejuvenation and life.

Maybe you try putting music on in the morning. Maybe that gives you a little energy boost. Maybe you wear your clothes two days in a row instead of one, and that morning decision-making energy can then be used for something else.

Maybe you light a candle once the kids fall asleep, drink tea, and read a novel, and therefore feel like a polished adult for a few minutes. Maybe you get jeans that actually fit and feel even more polished :)

I'm telling you. The little tiny changes and choices add up and build on top of each other and become extreme mood boosters. That's why I fell in love with having fresh-cut flowers in my house. I couldn't help but feel a little spurt of joy every time I looked at them. And those tiny moments of joy get me through. I want you to feel that feeling of having fresh flowers in your home, too. Not just to make your house look prettier and more full of life (although it will do that). But for you to feel more full of life.

Luther Burbank, a pioneering American botanist and horticulturalist, said, "Flowers always make people better, happier, and more hopeful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul."

Medicine for the soul.

There is so much talk nowadays about physical health, nutrition, and medicine for our bodies. And all of that is so important. But are you overlooking your internal health?

Find small attainable ways to prioritize yourself. You might not be able to take a whole spa day right now. But maybe you can read a novel for ten minutes tonight. Ten minutes of reading is better than no reading. You can be a person who reads novels, lights candles, and smells fresh flowers.

And how stressed can that person be?

You can do this. You can be a person who has fresh-cut, locally grown flowers in their home. You can prioritize yourself and find ways to experience joy and rejuvenation in everyday life.

You can buy yourself the flowers.
